Junior sailor are the heart and soul of our school and we are proud to have taught countless kids to sail over the last 30 plus years, Here are a few facts about the camps in general, followed by details on each of the programs currently offered.
Our programs
"Junior Learn to Sail" is where sailors will learn the basics of sailing over a 1 week period. Traditionally this has been run as a 2 week program and we encourage beginners to take 2 weeks if possible. Scheduling considerations due to Covid has required that we move to a 1 week program.
The program includes: boat rigging, parts identification, wind direction, boat handling, and water safety and fun! The hours will be 9 AM to 4 PM each day. Most programs will run for 10 days over 2 weeks (Monday through Friday each week). If one of these falls over July 4th, we skip the 4th and run a little later on every other day. We also offer a teen only version of this class that runs for just 1 week for those teens who prefer to learn with kids their own age.
"Junior Intermediate Sailing" is designed for Juniors who have mastered the basics and have good prior sailing experience. The class will help students improve their technique, as skippers and crew, including more advanced boat handling and racing: starts, mark rounding, and tactics. Juniors are ready for intermediate lessons once they have sailed enough to be comfortable rigging and sailing a boat on their own.
"Junior Racing" is for Juniors who want to challenge their skills against other sailors. We will be teaching and racing in both single handed boats (Lasers) as well as double handed boats (FJs). The program will start with a full week of racing instruction as well as 10 weeks of Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. Instruction will take place on Tuesday evenings and the students will race with the rest of the Sailing Club on Wednesday evenings. Students will also have the opportunity to race in regattas both at SLSC and at other clubs. This program is designed for experienced sailors, but race experience is not necessary.
"Adventure Sailing" is for experienced juniors who want to explore the many different aspects of sailing besides racing. It is intended for juniors who have completed the intermediate sailing programs and are very comfortable sailing on their own. We will play around with as many types of boats as we can get our hands on such as keelboats, multihulls and a variety of dinghys. We'll cover a wide range of sailing skills related to day sailing and cruising including motoring, docking, anchoring, navigation skills, and mostly just sailing for the fun of it. Wherever possible we will adjust the curriculum to accommodate the interests of the kids. The program will run throughout the season and includes a full week of sailing and will also meet on Thursday evenings throughout the summer. We understand that not everybody is able to make every session in a season long program given vacations, other commitments, etc. We try to offer a wide range of times so that all the juniors can get on the water regularly.
- We accept students between the ages of 9 and 17 in our junior programs. We may make exceptions for 8 years old who we feel have the maturity to make it through full day sessions. You can contact us to discuss. Older teens sometimes prefer our classes just for teens or we may accept mature older teens in our adult classes as well. If you have any questions where they fit, just shoot us an e-mail and we'd be happy to answer questions.
- Classes for juniors usually run from 9AM to 4PM on a weekly (Monday to Friday) basis. Some classes run 2 weeks and our most advanced classes also have a season long component.
- Early drop off and late pickup are available
- Classes tend to run around 15 juniors in any given week and we usually maintain a 3 to 1 or 4 to 1 student;teacher ratio.
- All of our Instructors and Sailing Counselors are trained by US Sailing. For more information on US Sailing Certifications, please visit US Sailing. They also all have First Aid, CPR and AED training at a minimum.
- In order of importance, we emphasize: Safety, Fun, Learning
- Gift Certificates are available for all classes and Private Lessons are available for all skill levels.
- We also offer group lessons if you have a large group of classmates, friends, relatives, whomever who want to come out together.
